Tonight there is a very special event going on in Hong Kong: it’s the Hong Kong No Air Con Night 2012! This means that everybody shall turn off their air conditioners to enhance public awareness about energy saving and wise use of air-cons.
The event is launched by Green Sense, a charitable institution established in 2004 in Hong Kong aiming to increase “environmental consciousness by education and publicity, in order to ultimately achieve an environmental friendly society, for the sake of our next generation”. I believe not many will follow this appeal tonight in Hong Kong, as even now at 7pm outdoor temperatures are still at 31°C. Yet, the use of air-conditioning in Hong Kong should be overall observed carefully, as a lot of energy is wasted by it every year. The necessity for hoodies in all shopping malls, while the sun outside burns at 30°C and the freezing conditions in trains and the MTR are horrendous! Therefore, even though not many might join the Hong Kong No Air Con Night 2012 today, it is a first step towards public awareness and increased work towards sustainability in Hong Kong. And I know, that my room in LPCUWC will join for sure!
You can find an article on energy wastage in Hong Kong, which I wrote this summer for the German magazine SPIESSER, here. It is in German.
