Established in 1962 by the German educator Kurt Hahn, the United World Colleges – UWC – celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. The education movement spreads into more and more countries, with 45,000 students from more than 180 countries having studied or graduated at UWC schools, colleges and programs and more than 140 national committees having been built up already. Even now, 50 years after the first UWC was founded in Wales, UWC’s aims and values are not less relevant to the world – in fact, maybe they are even more important now! The mission statement UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future is still leading and guiding all members of UWC, whether they are students, alumni, teachers or members of the individual national committees and I must say that I am truly proud to be part of UWC and to have the great opportunity to be student at a United World College.
To celebrate UWC at 50, many actions have been taken already and many more are to come. There has been a photo contest addressing “The Celebration of Difference”. All photos can be viewed online, the winners are announced on the UWC-Facebook-Page. Furthermore, David Hawley, the director of Pearson UWC in Canada, started a 4 month bicycle ride all across Canada, then over to the UK and finally to the UWC-Atlantic College in Wales, to arrive there in September for the 50-Year-Celebrations. His aim is also to meet different UWC alumni from each year of graduation since 1962 on his trip. On his blog you can read all about his experiences on the trip. Finally, the UWC-Facebook-Page has also started a Coverphoto-Campaign for all users of Timeline on Facebook. Coverphotos from many UWCs have been uploaded already: from LPC the famous photo of the “Closing Flower” by Vincent Wong during the Chinese Cultural Evening 2012 in LPC has been chosen to represent our college.
I look forward to the celebrations next year and will certainly keep you updated on all that happens in and around LPC! :)
